A New Beginning After A Bitter Ending

After years of disputes against Konami, game director Hideo Kojima and his division “Kojima Productions” left the company in 2015. They immediately re-established as an independent game development company. Kojima partners with Sony Interactive Entertainment and started a  new "PlayStation game". He also collaborated with Hollywood directors Guillermo Del Toro and Nicolas Winding Refn for the screenplay. The first trailer for Death Stranding utilized photogrammetry and motion capture. It gave an uncanny, eerie and surreal impact on the audience as actor Norman Reedus cradled a breathing fetus. More actors joined in the casting and teasers revealed more about the game. Fans got elated with the star-studded cast and the promising story that Kojima presented through the years.

Beached Like Fishes

Death Stranding features open-world exploration with multiplayer options. The game takes place in the near future where civilization has collapsed. Supernatural phenomenons called Death Stranding have ravaged the planet. Hostile monsters also appeared with the supernatural phenomenon. Players assume the role of Sam Bridges and they have to save humanity from extinction. The game comes with special game mechanics. Every time Sam gets killed, they get stranded into a submerged, upside-down world. Everything in the other world resembles a dream-like environment with beached fishes and outlandish creatures. Their actions before their death will remain in the world. Players have to escape the other world to resume their mission. They can also recover dropped items after dying. The other game mechanics is the rain called Timefall. Anything that got drenched by Timefall will age or deteriorate. Players can also have an out-of-body experience. The players can fend off threats with firearms. They are also encouraged to explore the world and interact with the objects. Kojima emphasizes on securing interactive items as if they are very important for the characters. Players can also upgrade their characters with better gear and firearms. There are a lot of extra contents from the Preorder, Special, Digital Deluxe and Collector Editions. Players receive physical collectibles and in-game rewards.

Reconnecting With The World

Death Stranding possesses a lot of potential due to the full control of Kojima. His artistic vision along with the direction of Del Toro and Refn makes it a one of a kind experience. It values a richer plot over shallow entertainment with microtransactions. This game proves that there is art in video games.
